How to find your great-grandfather’s birth record in Italy

With a full name, an approximate date and the town of origin you can already begin. Digitised registers save months of waiting.

The first thing you need is the town of origin. It usually appears on the ancestor’s marriage or death certificate, or on the passenger list of the ship they arrived on.

With that, you can write to the comune’s ufficio di stato civile or search the Portale Antenati, where Italy’s Ministry of Culture publishes millions of digitised civil records. For births before unification, parish books are the main source.

Once the record turns up, ask for the full copy: that is the one accepted for citizenship applications.
