What AIRE is and why you should register

The registry of Italians living abroad is mandatory for anyone outside Italy for more than twelve months, and it unlocks almost every consular service.

AIRE is the registry of Italian citizens who live outside Italy. Registration is mandatory for anyone living abroad for more than twelve months and is done through the consulate that covers your address.

Being registered lets you apply for a passport and ID card at the consulate, receive your ballot to vote from abroad, and keep your marital status and address up to date.

The process starts online on the consular portal, and it is best done as soon as your citizenship has been recognised.
