Argentina launches citizenship by investment as Italy restricts citizenship by descent

The Argentine programme, presented in Paris on 2 October, offers two routes: a $350,000 contribution or $800,000 in bonds.

On 2 October 2026, at an event in Paris, the Argentine government presented a programme allowing foreigners to apply for Argentine citizenship in exchange for an investment. There are two options: a non-refundable contribution of US$350,000 to the Treasury or the purchase of US$800,000 in government bonds, with special conditions for family members.

According to the government, applications would open in the last quarter of 2026. Payment does not guarantee citizenship: every application will be checked for identity, background and the source of funds. The plan has sparked political and legal debate in the country.

The announcement comes as Italy applies its 2025 reform, which limited citizenship by descent for people born abroad with another nationality and mainly affects countries such as Argentina and Brazil. According to ISTAT, about 6,604,000 Italian citizens were habitually resident abroad at the end of 2025.
